If collision – consider staying attached to the other vessel you may both be keeping each other afloat.

  • Stop Engine
  • Alert the master – muster passengers and crew to the deck in lifejackets
  • Prepare fire and bilge pumps.
  • Observe around the vessel for signs of pollution.
  • Light or day shapes
  • Change AIS status
  • Consider anchoring or beaching.
  • Inform ships in the vicinity – broadcast distress alert or urgency message
  • inform VTS coastguard- Mayday, pan-pan, security.
  • Remove portable radio VHF, EPIRBS, SARTS from down below.
  • Seek assistance if required.
  • Update ship log.
  • Report to MAIB.
